Anyone who grows peas will find that they have a lot of pea pods left over at the end of the season. At the end of the day you can compost these, but instead they make a delicious wine which is very cheap to make. It is a light, pleasant tasting wine which is firm favourite with many allotment owners.
To make this wine you will need the following ingredients:
- 2.25kg (5lb) pea pods (peas removed)
- 1.5kg (3lb) sugar
- 1 tablespoon citric acid
- 1/2 teaspoon grape tannin
- 4.5 litres (1 gallon) water
- Yeast and nutrient
- Wash the pea pods and then boil them until they become tender.
- Remove the pea pods from the water and stir the sugar in to the liquid until it has dissolved.
- Wait until it has cooled to a yeast tolerant temperature then add the yeast and rest of the ingredients.
- Ensure well mixed and then pour into a demi-john or other brewing vessel and fit an airlock.
- When the wine begins to clear siphon it off and bottle when the fermentation process has finished.
