Allotment Diary – Storm Damage and Apple Tree Bargains

Well, we’ve had some storms here, worst for a long time apparently with flooding across the country!

After the high winds and rain in the last week I decided I ought to take advantage of a brief break in the weather to go and check my plot. Sadly the greenhouse is no more! It was only a plastic one and it was already broken so I am not surprised, so I am using the cover on the ground as a weed suppressant for now and cleared the space. There were lots of pots in, many with no bottom (made so the plants grow down into the soil I assume).

The area where the compost heap is was completely sodden and slightly flooded, but not bad compared to many other people on other sites. I had thought this was the case with this area when I put the compost there, but it makes good use of an area that I doubt would be good for much else.

I also found some bargain apple trees at just £1.20 each! Plus two plum trees. In the video I’ll show you how to check these bargain trees to ensure they are still alive. I’ve put three in the ground to form part of my living fence whilst the two plum trees are in pots waiting for me to clear the space for them to go.
